WELL, YOU MUST!
Siquijor, the third smallest province in the Philippines with a size of 343.5 square kilometers, is undeniably among the country’s next tourist hot spot. A perfect getaway known for its scenic beauty, prehistoric churches, wonder of nature, and a hint of history.
Very little is known about Siquijor and its inhabitants before the arrival of the Spaniards in the 16th century. The original inhabitants came as farmers andfishermen from Cebu, Bohol and the adjacent islands.
Back then, the Spaniards referred the place as “Isla de Fuego” which means“Island of Fire” due to the swarms of fireflies generating fluorescence found in the island referring to the eerie glow the island gave at night as Spanish galleons passed by.
Siquijor Island is located in Central Visayas southeast of Cebu and Negros, southwest of Bohol and north of Mindanao. Forestlands occupy 54.2% (about 18,000 hectares) of the province while agricultural (corn, coconut, cassava, palace, peanut, banana, jackfruit and mango) lands occupy 39.6% (about 13,600 hectares). It also has 15 hectares of fish ponds and 71 hectares of swamp lands. Siquijor is made up of 6 towns (Enrique Villanueva, Larena, Lazi, Maria, San Juan and Siquijor). Its capital is the municipality also named Siquijor.
